Best Happy Hour in Downtown Milwaukee

Looking for the best happy hour in downtown Milwaukee? The VIG runs oysters, tuna poke tacos, and craft cocktails on a 2,000 sq ft lakefront patio in Juneau Town.

A Lakefront Patio for Happy Hour in Downtown Milwaukee

Downtown Milwaukee doesn’t lack for after-work bars. It lacks for after-work bars where the drink is worth the walk from the office and the seat is worth the trip in from the suburbs. The Vig Milwaukee opens this summer on the second floor of The Couture with a happy hour built around both — a 1950s refined kitchen and sports parlor, a 2,000-square-foot lakefront patio, and a menu that reads shorter than most and better than most.

The Vig’s patio hangs over the lakefront, with the Calatrava on one side and the Summerfest grounds on the other. In practical terms, that makes it the best-sited happy hour seat in the city between May and October. The interior — 8,500 square feet of it — holds the crowd the rest of the year. Either way, the room is a walk from most of downtown, one block off the Milwaukee Street stretch, and directly on the Hop streetcar line for anyone landing from farther out.

What’s on the Happy Hour Menu

The happy hour menu is short and sharp: oysters, tuna poke tacos, and a rotating lineup of shareables from the main kitchen. The cocktail program runs the same list — classic builds done properly and a rotating set of signature drinks like the Better Call Kell — with a bubbles pour that pairs with everything on the plate. Milwaukee-specific additions include cheese curds and Bloody Marys, developed with local chef Robert Kabakoff.

After Work in Juneau Town

Juneau Town is the eastern edge of downtown, wedged between the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan. It’s where the after-work crowd tends to end up — close enough to the office towers to walk to, close enough to the water to feel like the workday actually ended. The Vig sits directly in that footprint. Come 5 PM on a weekday, the patio does what a patio in Milwaukee is supposed to do in July, and the interior does what an interior is supposed to do in February.

Happy Hour Before Dinner, Happy Hour Instead of Dinner

The Vig runs happy hour early enough to catch the after-work crowd and late enough to hand off to the dinner service or the late-night crowd depending on how the evening goes. Which is the point of a happy hour worth showing up to — it should feel like the start of the night, or it should feel like the whole night. Not the version in between.
